It's no coincidence that Still Corners' most popular song - played just under 30 million times on Spotify - is called The Trip. The music of the dreampop duo, who themselves moved from London to Texas via the English coast, takes you irrevocably on a journey. On the way, panoramic views, deserted motorways and vast deserts are foretold. And a Mystery Road takes us straight through a Bad Town, to
… end at that beautiful Old Arcade. As on the equally successful predecessor Slow Air (2018), the songs on this fifth Still Corners album fit neatly within the imaginary square of Mazzy Star, Lana Del Rey, Beach House and Chromatics. But The Last Exit is a bit more solid and dynamic, with a noticeable emphasis on 'real' instruments like the repeating piano in the title track and Greg Hughes' lap steel guitar. That way Hughes and the excellent singer Tessa Murray keep moving musically as well. And with White Sands, The Last Exit also contains a new potential audience favourite. (RME)more
