It may be hard to imagine, but Modest Mouse was still at #1 on the US album chart this century. That was with
We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank (2007), when British master guitarist
Johnny Marr had joined the Americans as a permanent band member. In the intervening period only two records of the contrary guitar band around Isaac Brock were released. And just like on
Strangers To Ourselves (which
… still reached the third spot in their home country in 2015), Modest Mouse On The Golden Casket seemingly makes little effort to continue its previous success. The strong first single We Are Between is still remotely reminiscent of award winning songs like Float On and Dashboard, but elsewhere the band taps from very different kegs. What to think of the inflammatory opener Fuck Your Acid Trip for instance? Or the new psychedelic influences in We're Lucky and Transmitting Receiving, reminiscent of, say, Mercury Rev? And who would have thought Modest Mouse would sound sexy again, like in Walking And Running? (RME)more
