The title says it all: this album by the Polish Hania Rani contains a collection of songs she wrote for film and theatre projects. Rani herself finds it interesting to write film music, because she has to take the wishes of others into account. She made the track list for this album from the pieces she liked best. The music on this album is unmistakably hers. The minimalist compositions are serene
… and carefully constructed, with subtle tension curves. The emphasis is on piano, but Rani also worked with violin, cello and viola. When the string instruments make their appearance, the music is given an extra dramatic layer. It makes one curious about the films and plays it was made for. But also without the visual material it is easy to make an image of it, because the power of imagination is central in Rani's music. (JvQ)more
