The Ibiza-based Englishman George Evelyn is one of the pioneers of English trip-hop and one of the artists who has been in the stable of the experimental WARP label for the longest time. Compared to Shout Out! To Freedom...,
Smokers Delight (1995) and
Carboot Soul (1999), the albums with which he became known as Nightmares On Wax, can be considered light fare. The album was mainly influenced by
… personal misery, the consequences of the COVID pandemic and Black Lives Matter. It takes a while for the music to get going and even then it lingers in a very low gear. This is expressed in languid trip-hop, dreamy trip-hop sung by vocalists who either feel very sorry for themselves, or don't feel like it at all, and an excursion to spiritual jazz with a dark edge. It makes Shout Out! To Freedom... the most drawling album N.O.W. has ever released. (AD)more
