Steven Brown is best known as the core member of
Tuxedomoon, the American group that made its home in Rotterdam and Brussels, among other places, in the early 1980s. With their avant-garde mix of post-punk, composed music and theatrical shows, the group still plays mostly in Europe. Brown currently lives in Mexico and on his solo album El Hombre Invisible the singer, keyboardist and saxophonist
… draws inspiration from his expatriate life. It's remarkable how closely it resembles the better and more accessible work of Tuxedomoon. Brown croons darkly and theatrically against repeating bass runs, transverse keyboard parts and meandering brass (including the trumpet of Tuxedomoon colleague Luc van Lieshout). At times Brown transitions into Spanish as he talks about the violent history, as well as the nature and other beauties of Mexico. The image-rich El Hombre Invisible will please any Tuxedomoon lover.
