Chewed-out guitar indie takes on a striking new sheen with the very young trio Horsegirl. These three Chicago pals barely finished high school and spent the lockdowns of the early 20s swooning over live footage on You Tube of
Sonic Youth and
My Bloody Valentine. It made them long for those heyday of raw guitar bands burning down sweaty clubs and imparting identity to their fans. Groovy guitars and
… drawn-out atonal interplay dominate the songs on Versions Of Modern Performance. They have studied their heroes (particularly Sonic Youth) well. What makes the music distinctive and lifts it up is their crystal clear and melodic vocals and harmonies, which have a very British feel. Nice how this contrasts with the distorted guitar seas and staccato tom tom rhythms. Old-fashioned and youthful at the same time. (MR)more
