The Sound broke up on a stage in Zoetermeer, due to a breakdown by Borland. He always held out hope that the band would get back together, but that - partly due to the death of keyboardist Max Mayers - was no longer an option. On 5:00 am, Borland
… seems to have settled with that idea and consciously chosen his own path. It came about with Tim Smith (Cardiacs) in the role of producer. The duo opted for rich and layered arrangements with plenty of wide-ranging guitar work. It contains rock solid and catchy songs in which Borland sounds at his best, such as Baby Moon, Vampiric and Over The Under. On this re-release, they stand proud, while the bombastic production (with just real computer drums) sounds dated. This CD, delivered by the Dutch Opposite Direction foundation, which takes care of Borland's artistic legacy, contains four extra tracks. (MR)more
