A Very Lonely Solstice was recorded at St. Ann & The Holy Trinity Church in New York. It turns out to be the perfect setting for the fragile and hushed music of Fleet Foxes. With the reverberating acoustics, frontman Robin Pecknold's anointing vocals come into their own even better. The songs are turned into intimate versions of originals from earlier albums. Except for the opening song (which was
… played with Resistance Revival Chorus), the songs are performed by Pecknold solo, backed by acoustic guitar. While it's a nice setting, the whole thing also remains a bit understated. Because of the minimal approach, there is no room for the sometimes wild tempo changes and compelling transitions from original versions of the songs. (JvQ)more
