Groups are usually formed in schools, practice rooms or the pub. With the Belgian Riptunes, things were different. A fan asked Luc Dufourmont (
Ugly Papas,
Idiots) to write a song as a birth announcement for his daughter who was born practically deaf. Dufourmont then called on his Idiots colleague Wouter Spaens and Riptunes was born. The first untitled feat contains nine songs that all bear a woman's
… name. The group wholesales in lingering Americana with a leading role for Dufourmont's languid baritone voice. The instrumental interpretation is elemental, with a lone cello and fine melodic guitar playing by Spaens. One sounds as if after midnight the last set is being played in a Belgian roadhouse, dark and melancholy but somewhat rippling in the end." (MR)more
