In 2017, Mac Rebennack aka Dr. John began work on an album of his beloved country songs, supplemented by new arrangements of familiar songs of his own and even a new song. During the recording process, his health deteriorated to the point that the studio had to be moved to Rebennack's own home. Before his death in June 2019, the album was fully completed to his liking. … heirs, led by daughter Karla R. Pratt, began polishing the album again. Songs were taken off and I Walk On Guilded Splinters was even given a new backing track by Lukas Nelson and his band. That rocking version is the main blemish on Things Happen That Way, which mostly showcases a well-heeled Dr. John behind his piano playing swinging New Orleans adaptations of country classics like Ramblin' Man and I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry.
