Turkey's Gaye Su Akyol is a singer, painter and anthropologist. And things are certainly going her way musically. Turkish psychedelic rock is quite fashionable anno 2022, due to bands like the Dutch
Altin Gün and the Israeli
Şatellites. Gaye Su Akyol's music certainly contains psychedelic elements, but on Anadolu Ejderi - her fourth solo record - she puts multiple styles to her hand. In the vocals,
… the sometimes traditional-sounding Turkish melodies dominate, but all sorts of things happen around them. Like the alienating distorted chorus, the retro drum machine and the buzzing bass line in Biz Ne Zaman Düsman Olduk. Su Akyol has a tremendously expressive voice that can suck you into her music even if you don't speak Turkish. This allows her to make her music sound menacing or exuberant with equal ease. (JV)more
