In any case, the album title is apt and seems to encompass in three words the wry and thoroughly polarized Netherlands of 2024. It doesn't get much more political on Samen Tegen Elkaar, the second album by The Hague-based camp trio Goldband. Or it must be their provocatively bad taste versus their faggy glam looks, with which they have won over and brought together every audience at many a major
… festival in recent years. How do they do it anyway, with their cheap 90s-house and musical-like melodies full of big feelings, horniness and compulsion to party? Or with lyrics and rhyme schemes whose Gordon as well as Bløf hairs stand up on end: 'You're like a wet dream, but just like that in real life.' Goldband does it with humor and the tongue firmly pressed into the cheek and takes you by surprise with that anyway (in exasperation, with a smile or even a consenting nod). Goldband is Tomorrow's Toppers and I'm looking forward to it, in the Arena soon. (MR)more
