The British band Wunderhorse began at the time of the corona pandemic as the solo project of singer, guitarist and songwriter Jacob Slater. Before that, he played in a London punk band and starred in the
Danny Boyle directed series about the
Sex Pistols. Midas is Wunderhorse's second album after
Cub (2022). The record sounds familiar, perhaps even too familiar. That's because the band does sound
… very much like the grunge bands that became famous in the early 1990s. In terms of influences, Nirvana is at the top of the list: Midas was even recorded in the same studio as Nirvana's In Utero (1993). But Midas is a very strong record. Although the band sound familiar, Slater and his colleagues seem absolutely unconcerned with resembling grunge greats. This self-assurance, energy and, of course, Slater's strong songs make Midas a rock-solid record. (JV)more
