In the kingdom of symphonic metal, Finland's Nightwish is the great ruler. That makes the Dutch singer
Floor Jansen, who has been with the band for more than 10 years, the queen, with her warm and theatrical performance. Also on the 10th album Yesterwynde, she fulfills her role with brilliance. In the eponymous intro, the band, orchestra and chorus meander around each other a bit more like an
… encampment of soldiers preparing for battle. Less than three minutes later the band erupts and Nightwish is up to speed. A real children's choir pulls by in The Day Of... and the intro to Perfume Of The Timeless would do well under yet another spin-off of Game Of Thrones. Guitars saw, orchestras pound and choirs yowl around Jansen, as in an apocalyptic musical. A tried-and-true formula that makes Nightwish such a beloved band. (MR)more
