A folkie - that's how Music Web described Basia Bulat based on her second album,
Heart Of My Own (2010). After that, things remained quiet around the Canadian singer-songwriter with Polish roots here for a long time, although the description continued to make sense on her next four albums. On Basia's Palace, however, she now reshifts course. Not too rigorously, admittedly - the basis remains carefully
… composed songs, sung in Bulat's fine slightly husky voice - but with a more pop-oriented sound. In particular, the soulful opener (and single) My Angel will take some getting used to for fans of the first album. Over a nice pulsing bass line, the now 40-year-old Bulat sings of "the rush of overwhelming emotions" that come with love at first sight. Did someone say "funky" there? Baby and Spirit then sound mostly uncluttered - not exactly a recommendation - but with tracks like the Poland-referenced Disco Polo, seasoned fans still get a fair deal. (RME)more
