The Huntsman's Apology was an oddity in the Rotterdam music scene of the 1990s. The group, spearheaded by dark baritone vocalist Erik Boekesteijn, sought inspiration from prog, folk and romantic poetry, making it quite unique at the time. More than 25 years after the live album
Bleeding On The Stereo (1999), Boekesteijn returns with the debut of Walsaurus, the duo he forms with multi-instrumentalist
… and producer Bert Thierauf, augmented by guest musicians. In that quarter century, Boekesteijn's heavy voice has only gained depth and maturity, in sung readings of the poetry of Emily Dickinson, Clare Harner and Wystan Hugh Auden, among others. Words of hope, sorrow, loss and death, which were translated into a collection of folk songs/soundscapes that progress slowly and solemnly, like a procession through the night. It is striking that precisely a fine interpretation of Nick Drake's melancholy Time Has Told Me shines a thin beam of light on Walsaurus' world. Singing, lisping, somber and humming, Boekesteijn makes the lyrics his own, digging deep into each poem and song. Creatures Of Grief & Loss is a probing, darkly romantic journey. (MR)more
