In 2024, Canadian-American singer-songwriter Neil Young undertook a tour of America. He played all alone this time, with guitar and piano. His wife
Daryl Hannah filmed the trip and put together the tuneful documentary Coastal. On the CD with its accompanying soundtrack, we hear a good-humored Young, with many songs he also performed solo on
Before + After (2023). Of particular note is a rowdy, and
… critically acclaimed rendition of Vampire Blues (On The Beach from 1974). Also, an extremely fragile version, played on a ramshackle piano, of Expecting To Fly, the song with which he had a hit in the 1960s with his first band Buffalo Springfield. Perhaps for the first time, we really hear a nearly 80-year-old Young here. (MR)more
