For her ninth album, singer Miley Cyrus searched for beauty in different places in order to deal with the insecurities and crises going on in the world. She drew inspiration from
Pink Floyds
The Wall (1979), the psychedelic horror film Mandy (2018) and fashion shows by Thierry Mugler, among others. In addition, the album is accompanied by a visual film, which was shown at the 2025 Tribeca Film
… Festival. It is interesting to see Cyrus' development, from Hannah Montana at Disney to major pop star with a lot of creative ideas. Yet those ideas don't always seem streamlined, leading to a kind of enjoyable chaos, something that also happened on the album Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz (2015). There's a lot going on, Something Beautiful, for example, has a theatrical edge supported by rousing horn and string arrangements. Within songs, genres such as disco, progressive pop, soul, psychedelic music and glam rock are played with. A lack of focus sometimes makes the whole thing whimsical, as well as unnecessarily complicated for what the singer is trying to convey. Still, there is plenty to enjoy on this quirky album - including the song Every Girl You've Ever Loved featuring top model Naomi Campbell (YvQ).more
