Initially, Tori Amos went into the studio to add some new tracks to a collection of B-sides and curiosities that would form the basis for her new album. Her efforts in the studio unexpectedly resulted in a double CD, one CD with eleven totally new songs (Venus Orbiting) and one with live recordings (Still Orbiting). The songs on Venus Orbiting sound quirky as you would expect from Tori Amos, but
… the melody lines are sometimes just too complicated (Riot Poof, Dàtura). Highlights are the moments that she takes place behind the piano, such as in intense sounding songs such as Josephine, Lust, Spring Haze and 1000 Oceans. Pop songs like Concertina and Suede sound dreamy. The live CD was recorded during the supporting tour for her previous album From The Choirgirl Hotel with intimate-sounding versions of well-known songs like Cornflake Girl and Little Earthquakes.
