With his furiously snarling voice and lyrics full of nihilistic slogans, Sex Pistols singer John Lydon (aka Johnny Rotten) in 1976 was the personification of the 'angry young man' and the mouthpiece of the first punk wave. Two years later he gave his followers the check by mixing dark and epic undergrounddub with poetic and more personal lyrics with PIL, perfected on the influential post-punk album
… . After that he became, although permanently engaged and good for a shouting match here and there, more and more a parody in himself, degenerating into those pathetic reunion in 1996. The Best Of British 1 Pound Notes chronologically shows all his video clips; from Anarchy In The UK (1976) to his solo song Sun (1997). Almost needless to say that the first twenty minutes are the most interesting, because from the hit (This Is Not A) Love Song he gets stuck in his role of angry and scary clown.
