In the twentieth anniversary year of Nevermind, this concert film by the famous Seattle grunge trio is released. It was filmed in October 1991, just over a month after the release of the classic Nevermind. The single Smells Like Teen Spirit just started its rise on MTV. How on earth could these beautiful 16mm film recordings be kept hidden for so long? We see and hear an eager and energetic band
… here, serious and without the anti-star allure with which Kurt Cobain in particular often used to disrupt later concerts. Only at the closing song does a guitar go to pieces, after the trio has worked its way through a long set list. Image and sound are pristine. The camera' s rightly ignore two dancers standing on both sides of the stage, but do extensively portray the exuberantly hopping audience in the packed theater. This is Nirvana as every fan would remember: intense, bold and uninhibited, and far from the dramatic ending. (MR)more
