On February 20, 1984, a lot of Doe Maar fans sat staring at the News with tears of red eyes. That day, newsreader Harmen Siezen announced that the Netherlands' most popular group was calling it quits. Little consolation: there were still two farewell concerts in De Maaspoort in Den Bosch. … members have to give an uncomfortable interview to a very young Dieuwertje Blok just before they climb onto the stage. Most of the fans in the audience are even younger than Dieuwertje. Yet those fans sing the lyrics, which are full of the thirties problem, verbatim. As extras, there are guest appearances by Het Goede Doel (in a reggae adaptation of Vriendschap) and a visibly hazy Herman Brood in Als Je Wint (and in Nederwiet he comes by again, but only to stand on his head). What remains is a passionate Doe Maar show, although the quartet sometimes seems visibly relieved to be allowed to play their last show. (PdK)more
