The Spanish flamenco singer Diego El Cigala became known for the albums he made with the Cuban pianist Bebo Valdes, in which they fused flamenco and Cuban music in a special way. The merging of genres opened the way to the exploration of even more music worlds. For example, El Cigala stayed in Argentina for a while and made the album Cigala & Tango. His raw gypsy vocals turned out to be an
… excellent match for the fiery yet strict rhythmic tango. However, El Cigala was far from having enough of Argentine popular music, in particular the inspiring vocals and repertoire Mercedes Sosa, who passed away in 2009. To give his second album with Argentinian repertoire a significantly different sound than the first, he invited guitarist Diego García 'El Twanguero' with his special electric guitar. This unusual duo was expanded with a Spanish rhythm section and the Cuban percussionist José Luis Quintana Changuito. South American classics such as Los Mareados and Por Una Cabeza have never sounded before in such an exciting arrangement. It takes some getting used to, but after several listens you will increasingly admire the creative expressions of the diverse musicians. (SvdP)more
