What a contrast! On her previous album Fado Tradicional she sang traditional fados, but on the follow-up Mundo, Mariza takes a new look at the wide world beyond. She still sings a few fado classics on Mundo (Maldiçao, Anda…), complete with Portuguese guitar and standard line-up. But usually she sings highly innovative fado songs that are sometimes more reminiscent of pop with a touch of fado,
… flamenco and Latin. As with the album Terra, Spaniard Javier Limón was the producer. The use of polyphonic background vocals and modern instruments is striking. Mariza performs two songs in Spanish (Alma, Caprichosa) and Padoce De Céu Azul is a Cape Verdean song in the Creole language. The lively Missangas, on the other hand, seems to be genuine Portuguese folklore. Despite all these innovations, Mariza remains a star with her beautiful voice in expressing emotions such as homesickness and longing. Mariza closes the varied album with a tender lullaby. (SvdP)more
