Renascence is a very special record. Kandia Kouyaté is one of the greatest female griot singers in Mali, a true diva. She was so successful that she had no desire whatsoever to record herself on record. Thanks to the convincing power of producer Ibrahima Sylla, the albums Kita Kan and Biriko were nevertheless made. When she suffered a stroke in 2004, she was unable to speak or sing at all for years.
She recovered very slowly. Again, it is thanks to Sylla's tenacity that she eventually gave in to his request to rejoin the studio with him. He confidently asked her to sing anything she remembered. Unfortunately, the seriously ill Sylla was no longer able to experience the end result, he died in 2013. His daughter Binetou Sylla and François Bréant completed this special project. Renascence ('rebirth') is a grandiose comeback from Kouyaté. If you listen to this charismatic singer, you can imagine her being called a ngara, an extraordinary performer with supernatural power.
