If there ever was one record to which the term crossover applied, it is this self-titled album by Abigail Washburn & The Sparrow Quartet. Produced by the world famous banjo player Béla Fleck, who is also part of the band, this record really explores all corners of so-called world music. Banjo player and singer Abigail Washburn has a leading role, but the aforementioned Fleck, cellist Ben Sollee
… and violinist Casey Driessen - musicians who have all made their mark in music - each make an important contribution. The unusual line-up of the band - two banjos, cello and violin - invites you to explore new paths and that is exactly what happens. Chinese folk songs get an americana treatment, but there are also influences from classical chamber music and even yodel. It may sound a bit sought-after on paper, but in the hands of these top musicians everything comes together into a natural whole. Here adventurous listeners can get their teeth into the old-fashioned way. (MS)more
