Wajahat Khan's family is unique in the world of Indian classical music. Since the 16th century, a golden age in the field of Indian music art, the family has been producing celebrated (court) musicians in an unbroken line. Wajahat Khan belongs to the eighth generation of musicians, but he is the first of the dynasty to make the sarod (a lute) his specialty. From his European debut in 1977, Khan has
… regularly toured Europe, the United States, Russia, Japan, Southeast Asia and of course India. In addition to being a musician, Khan is also known as a composer and teacher. He teaches worldwide with the aim of spreading the knowledge and appreciation of Indian classical music. The series "A mystical music", broadcast on the BBC World Service radio station, was a great success. Khan finds it a challenge to integrate both Indian and Western music in his compositions. The album "Indian dreams" contains two compositions; a quintet for sarod and string quartet and a piece for sarod accompanied by tanpura (a kind of hurdy-gurdy). The quintet will be performed by Khan and the Medici String Quartet. The British string quartet strums and strings lustily, and its sound idiom blends excellently with Khan's sarod playing. Typical of Khan's compositions and playing are elegant and lyrical melodies, a great rhythmic variety, a virtuoso technique and great musical expression. Surprising and pleasant music.
