Achai is the Tuvan word for 'father'. A striking title for music that has traditionally been passed on from father to son. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the folk music of (a corner between Russia, Mongolia and Kazakhstan) was slowly but surely picked up in the West. Typical is the singing style that seems to bubble up deep from the throat. Special are the overtones with which the singers
… suddenly seem to sing with two voices: a low voice and a high whistle. The group Alash consists of three Tuvanes who were allowed to record this album in the US for the renowned label . Not surprising, because the men from Alash play pure folk music. They sing about the daily life of the Tuvanes: songs about horses, the prairie and the cattle. An extra plus with this edition is the booklet with a lot of information about the songs and the history of this unique music. (PdK)more
