J.J. Johnson (Indianapolis, 1924) was the principal trombonist of the bebop-time. He pulled out a saxophone-like sound from his instrument and often played with a speed that only saxophonists seemed reserved. Johnson became known in the orchestra of Benny Carter and his participation in the Jazz at the Philharmonic concerts. Along with college-trombonist Kai Winding he formed the duo Jay & Kai.
Johnson died in 2001.more
