The Pixies in Boston were founded in 1986 by friends Charles Thompson (aka Black Francis) and guitarist Joey Santiago. Through an ad in a music magazine attracted first bassist Kim Deal and later drummer David Lovering. … Black Francis contrasted nicely with the husky voice of Kim Deal, as told in typical favorites such as Pixies Gigantic and Debaser. After promising album Surfer Rosa (1988), the Pixies did with Doolittle (1989) off its most consistent and accessible album. After Bossa Nova (1990) and the somewhat disappointing Trompe Le Monde (1991) the band fell by disagreements between Francis and Kim Deal apart. The influence of the Pixies on the alternative guitar wave of the nineties was enormous. Reportedly Kurt Cobain considered the breakthrough Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana as a blatant rip off. Deal did with her other band The Breeders (with sister Kelly Deal Throwing Muse Tanya Donnelly in the ranks) in 1993 to score a huge hit with alternative Cannonball. Black Francis changed his name to Frank Black and The Catholics made his band a series of albums of varying quality. In 2004 the world by surprise by the announcement that The Pixies will make a series of reunion shows, bringing them include Pinkpop, exactly fifteen after their first appearance in Landgraaf.
