The legendary alternative rock band Nirvana almost single-handedly brought to the mainstream subculture of 'grunge'. Their second (breakthrough) album Nevermind was released in late 1991 and early 1992 reached the first of the US album charts, which she established competitors like Michael Jackson and Dire Straits left behind. Cobain struggled when all in his new role as spokesperson for a generation.
His battle with heroin and turbulent relationship with his wife Courtney Love - the band Hole - also took their toll. The less polished successor to In Utero confirmed the quality of Cobain's songwriting, although the album did not have the same commercial impact. His tragic suicide in April 1994 robbed the world of a great talent, but the legacy of recordings remains.
