Julius Kikumba was born in 1949 in Zaire. From twenty he was on stage, initially under the name Shungu Wembadio. In 1975 he assumed the pseudonym Papa Wemba. With his group Viva la Musica he became one of the most famous exponents of the Congolese rumba.
