Finnish heavy metal quartet Nightwish was founded in 1996 by keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen and the classically trained singer Tarja Turunen and quickly became a leader in the symphonic metal, a genre which is characterized by complex arrangements and the use of keyboards. On the debut album Angels Fall First also hear folk influences. The international breakthrough came with the single Wish I Had
… An Angel, their fifth album Once (2004). Because it was part of the soundtrack to the horror film Alone In The Dark, the band became known in America. After the world tour to promote this album was made, the band took leave of Turunen. Her replacement Anette Olzon, the Swedish band Alyson Avenue, was first heard on Dark Passion Play (2007).more
