Like many underground rock bands from New York City The Strokes were first noticed in England, although it was not long before their unpolished sound at home was picked up. With a mix of Velvet Underground / New York Dolls proto punk and lazy, Pavement-like lo-fi rock group sounds like a homage to their heroes. The debut Is This It, which was eagerly awaited, gained many year-end lists in 2001,

The successor Room On Fire was released in October 2003, received many positive reviews, but was unable to match the million sales of its predecessor.
