According to Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, his father Johann Sebastian Bach would rather have accompanied the orchestra with the violin in his hand than from the harpsichord. This eyewitness account probably refers to the time when Bach was associated with the Collegium Musicum in Leipzig between 1729 and 1741. This Collegium gave a weekly concert in the open air, or else in one of the coffee houses,
… if the weather was good. In addition to local musicians and traveling virtuosos, this ensemble sometimes also performed Bach's sons and students, who not only played but also helped copy the parts. Without this copy, many of Bach's works, including a number of violin concertos, would have been lost. The Academy of Ancient Music, conducted by Andrew Manze, released a CD of the concertos for violin (BWV.1041, BWV. 1042) and two violins (BWV.1043, BWV.1060). The solo parts are played by Andre Manze and Rachel Podger. _more
