This CD by countertenor Andreas Scholl bears the business title Bach Cantatas. This is somewhat striking, because you get the impression that the choice of repertoire is well-considered and that a story is clearly told. The story of someone who prepares for death and is at peace with it (Cantate Ich Habe Genug), who draws strength from his faith and says goodbye to all earthly worries (Cantata Gott
… Soll Allein Mein Herze Haben and aria Bekennen Will Ich Seinen Namen ) and who approaches his own day of death with conviction (recitative Komm Du Süsse Todesstunde and aria Schlage Doch, Gewünschte Stunde). However, no reference is made to such an overarching theme anywhere in the textbook. The listener is allowed to draw his own conclusions. But it has turned out to be a beautiful album with beautiful music in which voice and solo instruments perform in harmony with each other. And an album with a comforting message. Bach at its best.
