A mix of Asian - mainly Indian - dance music with western styles. Originally the dance music bhangra was played during the harvest festival in the Indian-Pakistan region Punjab. From the seventies onwards, the music is mixed by the large Indian community and England with the music that is popular there: first with rock, later with hip-hop, R&B and dance. This fusion is not limited to the bhangra alone: other music from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh also serve as inspiration. Rapper Apache Indian and the bands Cornershop and Asian Dub Foundation transcend the underground and also penetrate the charts in the Netherlands. Of a different order, but also immensely popular, are the musical-like soundtracks from Indian Bollywood films.
