Indian classical music has two main forms: the Hindustani from the north and the Carnatic from the south. In the first, improvisation is an important factor, in the second it is more about short compositions. Characteristic instruments in Indian classical music include the sitar - a complex stringed instrument - and the tabla (a kind of drum). The almost meditative qualities of the long improvisations also appeal to the imagination of Western music.imagination. Elements of Indian classical music can even be heard with the Beatles.
