George Enescu (1881-1955) was a Romanian composer, violinist, conductor and teacher. He is widely regarded as the most important and versatile composer in Romania. His career is characterized by a shared loyalty to Romania and France, where he also died. Enescu was a busy man, so his oeuvre has remained relatively small. This CD contains two works: symphony no. 1 and Vox maris. Enescu's first symphony
… dates from 1905 and shows a clear influence from Wagner. Yet the work has its own style. No less impressive is "Vox maris", a symphonic poem for orchestra and choir that tells about a shipwreck and the despair of the crew. "Vox maris", which dates from 1929-1951, was first performed in 1964. The Moldavian Philharmonic Orchestra is conducted by Alexandru Lascae, who we already know from the Brabant Chamber Orchestra.
