The life story of Josef Lanner (1801-1843) is not as colorful as that of the members of the Strauss family. Moreover, not much is known about it yet. Only in 1994 a reliable biography and an oeuvre catalog with some 300 works appeared in Vienna. The popularity of Johann Strauss (1804-1849) extended across Europe, while that of Lanner was limited to Graz, Mailand and Br³nn. In the 1930s, Strauss
… and Lanner were both active in one of the most popular dance halls in Vienna. Now that the interest in the Strauss family and their works is taking on enormous proportions, Lanner, unfortunately too late for himself, still shares in fame. The Ensemble Wien performs 13 dances from Die Neapolitaner, Fl³chtige Lust, Die Kosenden and die Haimbacher Erinnerungswalzer. (LW)more
