Toru Takemitsu, who passed away in 1996, owes his reputation as the most popular Japanese composer to a beautiful orchestral style, full of expressive wave movements, supported by extremely refined instrumentations and perhaps overly hedonistic harmonies, with nature and the dream world as the main sources of inspiration. That Debussy was one of Takemitsu's examples here is probably nowhere as
… clearly expressed as in "Quotation of dream" for two pianos and orchestra. The quotations in this work are not only taken from Takemitsu's own compositions, but also from Debussy's "La mer". 1991's "Quotation of Dream" first appeared on CD in a performance by pianists Paul Crossley and Peter Serkin and the London Sinfonietta conducted by Oliver Knussen. This excellent CD (released in the Deutsche Grammophon series 20-21) contains more works by Takemitsu (including "Twill by twilight in memory of Morton Feldman"). The carefully composed program is framed by two 'heavenly' brass bands: "Day signal" and "Night signal" from "Signals from heaven" for two groups with brass instruments.
