In his piano concertos, Malta's most famous composer offers a mixture of styles and cultures. Camilleri started his Concert No. 1 in 1948. In that year he came to London where his Malta Suite was successfully performed at a Promenade Concert. It is a romantic and sometimes virtuoso work that is especially striking for its dance rhythms. In Concert no. 2 influences from the Middle East are noticeable.
In the 1960s the composer was strongly inspired by Eastern music. The 3rd Concert was written at the request of Tikton Khrennikow who met Camilleri in Russia in 1985. It could have been written by a student of Shostakovich. In short: a good dose of craftsmanship at Camilleri, but no style of its own. André De Groote and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra under Michael Laus provide adequate interpretations. CD premieres.more
