Krzysztof Penderecki, who, together with Witold Lutoslawski, is one of the most important Polish composers of this century, became known in the 1960s for the exciting orchestral work "Lamentation for the Victims of Hiroshima". The techniques Penderecki used here were far from traditional. Instead of recognizable melodies and harmonies, the listener was overwhelmed with dense sound masses full of
… howling strings. Yet Penderecki would not remain such an innovator all his life. After a while he started to deal again with traditional concepts, such as the symphony, the concerto, the sonata, etc. That this revaluation of the tradition does not necessarily lead to slavish imitations, is proven by the exceptionally beautiful CD on which clarinetist Sharon Kam plays music from Penderecki.
