Although the Swedish trumpet player Hakan Hardenberger masters the entire repertoire, he has mainly focused on contemporary music. He has provided the premieres of Mysteries of the Macabre by Ligeti, the Requiem by Henze and the Concerto Piccolo on BACH by Pärt. On this CD Hardenberger interprets HK (Heinz Karl) Gruber's compelling Aerial. The first part evokes an imaginary landscape beneath the
… northern lights, while the second part flirts with the old dance films of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. The other concerts show other aspects of contemporary composing. Jet Stream by Peter Eötvös is most indebted to the modernism of the last century. More popular styles can be heard in From the Wreckage by Mark-Anthony Turnage, where the trumpet player frees himself from the wreckage of the title display and gradually becomes more jazzy. (HJ)more
