… according to this CD the Englishman Francis Pott (* 1957) is one of them. Pott himself plays two piano works, "Farewell to Hirta" from 1985 and "Hunt's Bay" from 1994. The first sounds like a kind of free Chopin imitation, the second has a somewhat more 'contemporary' idiom, albeit very modest. It is clear that Francis Pott is most at home in the musical traditions of the 19th century. The question of whether Pott is just traditional or reactionary, inevitably arises with the pièce de résistance on this CD, the 1995 "Cello Sonata", a four-part work with an impressive playing time of almost an hour. Pott started on this piece in 1983 and has therefore worked on it for over 10 years. Vaughan Williams' well-known statement about his "Symphony No. 4" that Pott, looking back at the result, quotes, "I'm not sure whether I like it, but it's what I meant at the time," will probably attract more people. are taken from the heart.
