Max Reger is remembered for his rather ferocious organ works. Much of that organ work came about in the years 1900-03, when the young composer was recovering from his wild years (the self-proclaimed 'Sturm- und Trankzeit'). Many of the organ works have something of a delirium. Reger could nevertheless write such complex scores directly in the net, without preliminary drafts. And that in beautiful
… handwriting. Reger's ferocity has something contradictory to this. Like no other, he mixed 's harmonic excesses with the technical virtuosity of and the melancholy of . The spirit of Brahms mainly dominates in the clarinet works of this CD, of which the two beautiful Sonatas op.49 were also produced around 1900.
