Great Britain has produced several female composers this century, some of whom have also made a name for themselves abroad, but for most Doreen Carwithen (* 1922) will be an unknown name. She studied at the Royal Academy of Music from 1941 and in 1947 began special training from Arthur Rank in writing film music. Carwithen eventually provided the music for more than 30 films on a wide variety of
… subjects. Despite her success in this field, her other music remained out of the picture and although the "String Quartets Nos. 1 & 2" played here by the Sorrel Quartet were both awarded chamber music prizes, they have been completely ignored for years, partly because English music publishers are not in 'a woman. composer 'were interested. The "Quartet No. 1" from 1947 the usual three movements, the "Quartet No. 2" written a few years later, has two, both taking about ten minutes to complete. The first part is a beautiful, atmospheric adagio in which the gloomy mood is well maintained. In addition, violinist Lydia Mordkovitch and pianist Julian Milford will play the "Violin Sonata" composed in the 1950s. Carwithen's idiom is somewhat conservative, akin to that of Vaughan Williams, and despite the more modern sounds she uses, her music is much more traditional than that of, say, her gene-runner Tippett. But that does not alter the fact that this is beautiful, well and tastefully written music that deserves better than to be completely ignored. (JvG) _ both of which take about ten minutes.
