The World Saxophone Orchestra originated in 1987 from an ensemble class at the Sweelinck Conservatorium Amsterdam. The ensemble lessons proved fruitful and a new orchestra, consisting of about twelve young saxophonists from the Netherlands and Belgium, was founded.
