Although the German Johann Rosenmüller spent most of his creative life in Italy, he was highly appreciated as a composer in Germany, making him an important link between Italy and the North. Rosenmüller's career started well, becoming cantor of the Thomas Church in Leipzig (1653). However, this development came to an abrupt end when in 1655 he was accused of fornication with students of the Thomas
… School. He immediately fled the city, presumably towards Venice, where he is mentioned in 1658 as a trombone player at the San Marco. It was not until the end of his life that Rosenmüller returned to Germany to become a 'Kapelmeister' at the court of Wolfenbüttel. The King ' s Noyse conducted by David Douglass (with Ellen Hargis as soprano) released a CD with spiritual vocal works and instrumental music by Rosenmüller. The CD opens with the "Suite in C" from the "Studentenmusik" (1654). (HJ) _more
