Philipp Heinrich Erlebach was one of the most prominent composers of his time, best known for his church music. He wrote hundreds of cantatas, of which unfortunately only a few dozen have survived. With this CD in hand, we cannot help but long for an Erlebach cantata project. On this CD we find three instrumental works, supplemented with two arias and a duet. And if Erlebach manages to bring the
… qualities of these works together in those cantatas, it cannot be otherwise than that some gems can be found there. An impression of this can be found on the only CD entirely devoted to Erlebach's cantatas (DBX8635). Be that as it may, the works on this CD are also very worthwhile in their own right. In the overtures we hear the entire richness of the typical baroque suite passing by with flair, and in the arias Erlebach shows his lyrical side convincingly. The performances of the Swiss Capricornus Consort, founded in 2006, are beautiful, and also pay attention to the impressive vocal part of the young talents Franz Vitzthum and Miriam Feuersinger.
